- South Main Street Project
The reconstruction of South Main Street is a key element of the revitalization of Historic Downtown Mansfield. South Main Street, from East Broad Street south to Hunt Street, will be transformed to an Urban Complete Street, a design approach that will reduce the speed on the street and safely accommodate pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists while improving the aesthetic of the downtown streetscape.
The South Main Street design features back in angle parking on both sides of the street, concrete sidewalks and decorative pavers. The area will be landscaped with trees and planters and include streetscape elements such as decorative lighting, benches, bike racks and trash receptacles. A retaining wall on the southern half of the street's west side will address the issue of the current street slope.
The $3 million project is currently in the design phase, with construction set to begin in Spring 2018. The South Main Street Project is being done in conjunction with the city's effort to move truck traffic from the historic downtown. Mansfield participated in the Texas Department of Transportation's Take Back program that allowed the city to take over maintenance and operation of Business 287 (Main Street) from 157 to 917 (Heritage Parkway). The truck route is being relocated north to move truck traffic onto U.S. Highway 287.
