Message From the Chief
From Fire Chief Michael Ross
Thank you for your interest in Mansfield Fire Rescue and for taking the time to visit our website. It is my honor to serve as the Fire Chief for such an extraordinary community and talented and dedicated department. Please have a look around and if you have any questions, please ask.
Our mission stated simply, is to make our citizens and our visitors feel as safe as possible in our community. We do this by providing service to the community through three divisions:
- Fire Administration - Handles policy administration, training, budgeting and daily logistics.
- Fire Operations - Handles calls for fire and EMS emergencies through four fire stations.
- Fire Prevention - Handles fire inspections, plan reviews and emergency management.
Each of these divisions contributes in different ways to make sure that the department as a whole stays mission-focused.
Every single member of our department was chosen because of their willingness to do whatever it takes to achieve our mission. We are very prideful of our department and the connection that we have with the individuals and families that we serve. With that in mind, there are several opportunities each year for us to engage with the community through parades, special events, National Night Out and the annual Fire Safety Palooza. Please check the city calendar for upcoming events. For those that would like a closer look at our operation, I encourage you to stop by and say hello to the firefighter/paramedics at your local fire station.
Items of interest
One of the things that you may learn at a station tour is that there are three shifts of firefighter/paramedics each working 24 hours per day. They change shifts each morning at 7 a.m. and work for 24 hours until 7 a.m. the next morning. It is usually pretty easy for a firefighter to know his or her schedule, as they work every three days.
Something else that is relatively unique to our department is that all Operations Division personnel are certified as both paramedics and firefighters. We are a department that operates our own ambulances, so we spend a great deal of time training and advancing our skills. Because of our skills in EMS, each of our ambulances operates as a Mobile Intensive Care Unit or MICU. This specialization is a benefit to the community.
